INTO A NEW YEAR...A CANDLE IN THE DARK

This holiday season…I’ve so much enjoyed seeing candles lit in various places.  The reverent glow from the soft lights can always seem to move me to a place of quiet reflection.  On Christmas Eve, I joined hundreds at a Christmas Eve service (@Ginghamsburg Church) where together we lit candles and sang worship songs in honor of our Savior, Jesus.

The flames from the candles made me think of our lives. How small and short they are in the span of history overall, but how significant a life can be if lit for God.  And I as I thought about the new year, 2014 incoming, the prayer I want for my way ahead is that my life be a candle in the dark.

Our world is covered in much darkness. I’m not talking about places where maybe there is no electricity or infrastructure, which are problems of course.  But there is a deeper darkness of sin, of hopelessness, despair, injustice, poverty that is present down every alley and street and path of our planet.

"Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat." Mother Teresa

LIGHT IS NEEDED!

Do we know and hold up the light of Jesus? Are we sharing His love in the dark places?

A few mornings ago, I was deeply moved in my quiet time when I read this …

Zechariah 3:1-6
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.  The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.” Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by. The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.

This burning stick was me, this burning stick was each of us. Sin had set us on fire for destruction, our clothes and lives were soiled and dirty and destined for destruction.

But thanks to Jesus, we’ve been offered grace and new clean priestly clothes to wear and a redeemed storyline to be part of with a mission and cause to live for!!! These burning sticks of destruction can be changed into candles, flames of hope, lights of life in dark places that point to a Savior!

What GOOD NEWS!!!!

Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.  He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

As this year, 2013, winds down, I plan to pause to sit quietly somewhere, light a candle, and remember the One who’s light and life gave me, us, freedom and right relationship with God!  I can’t say enough how grateful I am!

And may I boldly move forward to give this light and good news to others as it has been freely given to me. May I go tell it on the mountains, or on furthest corners of the sea, in every valley and desert, that a Savior can be known! For there’s no greater One to live for and die for!

Matthew 5:13-15
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

A missionary doctor friend of mine recently posted this in her update about this Christmas season as she was reflecting on life from where she is now serving in the Horn of Africa. It blessed me….

Reminders of this season have been quite different this year.  Usually I delight in the sights of Advent and Christmas--twinkling lights strung from trees, wreaths adorning doors, small stables filled with donkeys, lambs, ogling shepherds and a new family; the sounds--songs of the newborn King; the tastes--peppermint and cinnamon and chocolate goodies; the smells--pine and firewood and cloves.  This week, however, the reminders are less of the Western interpretation of the birth of our King and of our created traditions (important as they are).  Maybe they are closer to that beautiful scandalous night when God came among us.  Camels walking in tandem, following a herdsman.  Donkeys laden with cargo, sheep and goats roaming where they wish.  Women, veiled, walking to neighbors' homes.  The cry of a newborn infant.  Food spiced with cardamom and other Middle Eastern spices.  Sweat and dirt and charcoal fires.

Not the Christmas cues to which I am accustomed.  But maybe more similar His first coming.  And in this place, a reminder that people who are suffering in darkness need the light of the One who came to show us the Way, the Truth, and the LIFE!!

May you be remember this Christmas the great gift of our Savior, "In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:4-5 ESV)

Amen!   May we share this Savior’s light with the world!

Onward into 2014…praying my life will be a candle in the dark!

All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.
St. Francis of Assisi

"A PLACE TO BELONG"

The weather globally has been crazy to watch the past several months. Powerful hurricanes, tornadoes in November, thousands left homeless.

Others globally are on the move because of war or famine.  Many are without a place to belong…

Right now there are about 42 million displaced people in the world.   One in every 170 persons in the world has been uprooted by war.  This is the largest category of vulnerable people in the world.  Of the world’s 12 million or so refugees, about 3.2 million are in Africa.  80 percent of the world's refugees are women and children who are more vulnerable to their unstable conditions. (from the International Rescue Committee)

Being displaced or out of place is not easy or comfortable.

I know in recent days, as I’ve prayerfully tried to look for the definite next door God would have me move through, the feeling of being displaced has been there. Where do I belong? Where is my best fit?

Have you ever felt displaced? Do you feel that way now?

Maybe a job change or transition has left you idle…

Maybe you’ve been left alone in or stranded by a relationship…

Maybe you’re just not fitting where you are…

Maybe a storm has displaced you…

Or a sin…

You’re out of place for whatever reason. And it’s not a comfortable feeling.

I was in a busy mall recently and sat down to observe the madness of the holiday season.  There was hustle and bustle.  I felt culture shocked and completely out of place.  I wondered how many others felt the same.

Observing the holiday madness and thinking about the displacement of so many globally…has made me feel some sadness. But then Jesus, our Savior and King, keeps coming to my mind.  Did He know the feeling of displacement? Of being out of place?

Absolutely!

Even before He was born, Jesus’ parents couldn’t find a proper place for his birth .

Luke 2:3-7
…everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth.  And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

PIC

Jesus spent a large part of his childhood as a refugee in Egypt.

And throughout His life, He struggled with the feeling of being out of place.  Listen to how He was described…

Isaiah53:2-5
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, familiar with suffering….Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows…He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds, we are healed.

THANKFULLY, because of Jesus- our ultimate displacement (the separation from God because of sin) wasn’t the end of our story.  Jesus made a way for us to be together with God by the sacrifice of His life.

My place, my security, is now forever with God.  When I’m feeling displaced, I can be encouraged in remembering that I DO HAVE A PLACE TO BELONG, it’s with God. His hand in in my mine on the journey home.

I’m so grateful for the journey with Him.  In looking back, it has led through continents… islands and mountains and valleys, has held laughter and tears and joy and pain.  He's been with me the whole time. Through ups and downs and falls and triumphs.  He' with me, with us!!!!

As we go into this Christmas countdown, I’m remembering so much of the journey and the great promises we’ve been given. I have a place to belong. You, we, have a place to belong! It’s not a geographical location, it’s a place that’s part of a family, a story- God’s.  How incredible!

1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy

Deuteronomy 8: 2-11
Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.  He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.  Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.  Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.  For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.  When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day

Isaiah 43:1-2
But now, this is what the Lord says—He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel:  “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze

John 14:17-19
…you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.   I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live

Deuteronomy 4:31
For the Lord your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors

Matthew 10:28-30
Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel  will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.

Hebrews 11:8-10
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.  By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.  For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

John 14:1-3
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.  If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

Psalm 84
How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

1 Peter 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you

Matthew 28:20
I am with you always…to the very end…

I’m so grateful for our Jesus!  May we remember Him and celebrate Him this Christmas season and always!

Onward, for Him and by Him and with Him as the journey continues!

THE ESSENTIALS

As the countdown to the Thanksgiving holiday continues… what fun it has been to think about the “ESSENTIALS” for Thanksgiving Day and help make those plans and preparations.

Even now, on Thanksgiving Eve, our house is smelling of good food for the big day tomorrow! Our parents have been great, reminding us of Thanksgivings from long ago, and of the things that have made Thanksgiving special.

One ESSENTIAL for Thanksgiving Day we've always made time for is to GIVE THANKS to GOD.  We’re making a list of what we can share about what we’re most thankful at this time.

My Mom has been thinking of the feast and what food to prepare. We've all submitted our favorites as requests. Good food seems to be ESSENTIAL for Thanksgiving Day.

My Dad has been looking at what football games will be on TV and what movie we can go to in the evening. Fun family time together is another ESSENTIAL.

My sister and I have looking for ways we can work off the extra food we will eat, ha ha.  We’re grateful for a “Turkey Trot” planned by our church to raise money for our Sudan project.  Thanksgiving exercise is an ESSENTIAL for us for the day. So, we’ve been getting ready for that.

My sister Noel, preparing for the Turkey Trot
Me acting like I'm having fun, brrrrrr.... I miss Ethiopia's running weather!
Nap time is also an essential.

We plan to enjoy it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been thinking about that word “essential” the past few weeks in another way too.

Webster’s dictionary defines “essential” as…. all-important; imperative; indispensable; vital; must-have; necessary; needed; required.

So what are the all-important, imperative, indispensable, vital things someone needs to have to follow Jesus and make a real impact in the world?

At the Global Missions Health Conference in Louisville, KY a few weeks ago, I was deeply inspired by so many there who seemed to have essentials needed do barbaric jumps of faith and live in trust of God.  They had understood God might not call them to the easy places to share His love … yet despite the discomfort and fear, they still moved and were moving.  To the corporate skyscrapers they were climbing, to the back alleys of dangerous neighborhoods they were riding, to the distant islands they were paddling … to proclaim God’s love and grace and hope to all who would listen.

WOW!

So what are the essentials to this kind of life of faith?

Well…God brought it all into focus for me this morning in my quiet time as I’ve been thinking about my journey behind and praying for what is ahead.

What is ESSENTIAL is relationship with God.

2 Peter 1:3-8
By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence. And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires...

God gives us Himself, in Jesus, and the opportunity to have a redeemed essence and storyline.  Partnership and relationship that is like none other!

In remembering this, we are ALREADY wired for the incredible life of faith journey, given already the essentials we need to do incredible jumps and feats for God.

Ephesians 2:19-20
…you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Isaiah 43:1-2
But now, this is what the Lord says—He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;  I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Romans 8:16
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

God often asks us to do things that are just beyond our own ability because He wants us to do it in relationship with Him. We can’t, but with Him, we can. Our weakness becomes strength.

In this relationship, He changes us from the inside out- and He helps us as we go to be effective and to represent Him well where He calls us to be.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!  All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

May we be encouraged and so grateful for our amazing God this Thanksgiving. You may not have the earthly relationship you desire; or -friends- family close by to share it with. You may not have a job you enjoy or the answers for the way ahead.  But you do have an amazing God who offers you relationship with Him and a life greater and more full than you could ever imagine!  What a reason to give thanks!

I pray a special Thanksgiving to each of you! Know I’m grateful for you!

Praises- Prayer Requests
-Praise- my family is grateful to have this holiday time together.
-Please pray for my plans for the new year, 2014- that God would show clearly His perfect plan for me.

Happy Thanksgiving 2013!

"WAITING ROOM"

As I write this, my family feels like we are in a “waiting room."

My Dad’s medical scare from a few weeks ago still has NO known cause. Doctors have been baffled. Tests have led to more tests.  And now we’ve been told to “wait” again for more test results.

I’ve remembered all over again the past month or so that times of waiting are NOT FUN.

Waiting times can be tense. They can make you crazy if you’re not careful.

Maybe you get impatient waiting for a result or a door to open or a phone call to arrive.

Maybe you get discouraged thinking you’re stuck where you are now and it will be that way forever.

Maybe worry sets in and overwhelms you as you go over and over again in your mind the “what ifs.”

So, many of us are in these waiting rooms for whatever reason.

And if you’re not in a waiting room, guaranteed one is not too far off.

Life seems full of these times of waiting.

Thankfully, God’s Word gives us some great insight for these times. God knew they would hit us and would be difficult for us.

These verses have been encouraging me….

Psalm 27:14
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Psalm 33:20-21
We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.

Lamentations 3:24
“The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Isaiah 64:4
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.

So what can we do while we wait?

I believe there are many things we can do.  Some key things are:

PRAY (talk to God and let Him speak to you)
God sees us in our time of waiting.  He wants us to talk to Him and allow Him to speak to us. He’s with us.

In these times of waiting, may we be in active communication with the One who has the peace, the comfort, the words we need to get us through.

1 Thessalonians 5:17
…pray continually

James 5:13-15
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 55:6
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on Him while He is near.

1 Chronicles 28:9
…the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, He will be found by you

READ GOD’S WORD
We also can read God’s Word during times of waiting. He gives direction, encouragement. He’s “online.”  Sometimes we ask Google, or friends or family for what to do, before we ask God. God’s Word is living.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

PRAISE/WORSHIP
We can give Him praise and worship while we wait.  This may not be easy. But it’s an incredible time to pause and reflect on who He is, what He’s done.

Sometimes we focus more on the situation we’re in than on our God- who is bigger than any situation. He is able to part seas, calm storms, heal the sick, open doors, close doors, rout advancing armies, give provision where there is none, give protection, give victory against impossible odds.  When we look at Him, we can’t help but praise and worship who He is.

1 Chronicles 16:12
Remember the wonders He has done

Deuteronomy 6:12
…be careful that you do not forget the Lord

Deuteronomy 8: 2-5
Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

Psalm 96:1-10
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.  Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples.

Psalm 95:6-7
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care.

BE WITH OTHERS (Stay in Community)
In the waiting rooms of life, we need to stay in or seek community. This is a tough one. Often when things aren’t working out the way we imagined, when we’re struggling in a difficult situation, we prefer to try to hide. We don’t want to burden others with what we’re going through.  But the Bible tells us we need to stick together. There’s strength in numbers.

We have an enemy as well that is seeking to “devour us.” To hit us when we’re down. Isolation is so dangerous. In our times of waiting, may we seek others who can sit with us there and help us pray. And may we be available for God to use us in others’ times of waiting too.

Hebrews 10:24-25
…let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching

1 Peter 5:7-9
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.  Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings

PREPARE
In these times of waiting, we can also prepare in faith for whatever is next.

Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good

1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

1 Timothy 4: 7-8
…train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

Ecclesiastes 10:18
…because of idle hands, the house leaks

SERVE
We can also “serve” as we wait.  God can use you in incredible ways in these waiting times.  In our weakness, God is so strong. In our own brokenness and humility is often when God can most clearly be seen in us to others.  My Dad continues to be an incredible example of this to me.  He continues to serve at our church in Children’s Ministry- and he gives it his very best.

Ephesians 6:7
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord…

Matthew 20:26-28
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

1 Peter 3:15
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have…

A book I’m reading recently reminded me of an important truth. In “A Shelter in the Time of Storm” by Paul David Tripp, it said:  “waiting isn’t just about what you are hoping for at the end of the wait, but also about what you will become in the wait.”

We can be transformed WHILE we wait. Waiting is a pressure that God can use to deepen your faith, strengthen your trust in Him. You can come out stronger because you’ve passed through the waiting room.

Isaiah 64:8
You, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit

2 Corinthians 4:17
…our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

James 1:2-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Times of waiting rooms can come unexpectedly.  Some last WAY longer than we ever thought they could. We stress about the unknown.

But God says, TRUST ME.  He is with us. We’re becoming who He wants us to be while we wait.

Exodus 14:14
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 27:13-14
I am still condiment of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord: be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

May we stay encouraged and lifting up our lives to God continually in our times of waiting. We can trust that He has us always!

ONWARD with You!

Prayer Requests
-Please continue to keep my Dad in prayer. He has test results that will be given the first week in November. During this time of waiting, my God give him peace and even joy that His life is securely in God’s hands.
-Please pray for family- that God will help us to encourage each other and enjoy this time together. We will celebrate my Mom’s birthday on October 27th, then my sister ‘s birthday (and mine, ha ha) on October 29th- that we can enjoy those days as we reflect on all God has done.

-Please pray for my way ahead. After much prayer, I have decided to take the semester off from teaching in Ethiopia. During the next few months, please pray that I can give good support to my family while also trying to finish my book.  Also that if a return to Ethiopia in January of 2014 is still God’s plan for me, - that He will provide and make the way clear.
-Please pray that as I meet with supporters, etc., that God will give me opportunities to testify to individuals, families, groups, churches, for I want to give God so much praise.  If I can speak to any church, group, etc, that you know of, please email me, I’d be honored.
-Please pray for my book- as I work hard to finish the draft- that God will help it come together.
-A big praise for YWAM (Youth with a Mission-Virginia) and the 26 of us who were certified as personal trainers a few weeks ago. That God will use this training to make His name great. And that those in this group continuing in a six month mission training school- will be unified and blessed as they move forward. They will in Brazil for three months soon using fitness as ministry in the time ahead. What a group!

-Please pray for the staff and students at the college I work for in Ethiopia- that God will give them a great semester. Also for my neighbors there – that God will give provision and joy.
-Please pray for the Global Missions Health Conference in Louisville, KY that I plan to attend in November- for the speakers and workshops and those attending- that connections will be made for kingdom expansion. I hope to connect with many of my Louisville friends while in the city and may God bless that time.
-Please pray for many serving God globally- that God will protect, encourage.

And for ALL of those in times of “waiting,” that God will encourage and strengthen!

Thank you so much for your faithful partnership in all!
